Dear Reader,
Welcome 2009!
We are busy looking through our crystal ball to the immediate
future and thought we should share some leading indicators for online growth that have recently shown up in e-Marketer, IAB and our own informal
surveys with clients. The news is mixed, but in general online marketing still seems to be a solid choice in the grand scheme of promotion budgets.
Historically a repressed GDP takes its toll on ad exposures and most off-line formats are predicting a continued decline. Online is expected to
continue to grow but not at the same rate that we have seen in past years. The really good news here is that we are still growing in numbers that
would be considered robust by most markets. The pharmaceutical industry (our key client) is clearly in a bit of turmoil in which ROI will be an ever
increasing metric of interest. Frankly, this is all the more reason why we are poised for sustained growth vs. other media channels and expect a
shifting of dollars from off-line areas into online (even though total budgets may decrease or remain flat). The economy helps to accelerate the
interactive advertising industry. Now more than ever, there is a need for measurable accountability and ROI.
Some key Macro stats:
- e-Marketer: Predicts 8.9% growth
for internet ad spending
- Barclays Capital Analysts:
Predicts 6.1% growth
- Jupiter Research: Predicts online
display growth to be 8% in 2009
Last, but not least, we completed our own survey which
provided more distinct insight into our pool of advertising clients and we received 78 responses. Our intent was to gauge budgets and tactics for
2009. Again, the numbers were encouraging. 74% of our clients indicated budgets would stay the same or increase VS 26% of clients indicated they would
decline for 2009.
We recognize that trending and analyst information is a tool
at best and often incites more questions than answers but we can always assure you with the highest degree of accuracy that we work hard every day to
maximize revenue for your respective sites. We value our partnership and welcome any suggestions or comments you may have that drives our shared goal
of profitability and success for the New Year of 2009.
Best Regards,
Ray Thibodeau, Vice President

Improved Outlook for Big
Pharma Stocks in 2009
Source: Morningstar.com
Following an approximate 25% haircut in their share prices in 2008, we expect pharmaceutical stocks to
perform well in 2009. Relatively few major patents expire in 2009, and we believe the industry's major patent expirations beginning in 2011 have
largely been factored into drug stocks' valuations. Also, we project several new drugs will gain traction in 2009, as well as a few key blockbuster
approvals.

Why Pharma Fears Social Networking
Source: Brandweek.com
Although a majority of marketers have embraced online social media and user-generated content efforts, one
industry is conspicuously not taking advantage of the gold rush: pharmaceuticals.
Drug brand Web sites almost never carry the features that
marketers usually are desperate to give their customers: bulletin boards, chat rooms, blogs and Web-page hosting.
The reason: Marketers fear
that user-generated content will include complaints about injuries caused by their drugs’ side effects. The law requires these “adverse
events” to be reported to the FDA. The FDA’s adverse-event databases are regularly combed by lawyers looking for potential class-action
suits.
Thus, drug marketers have stuck with a decidedly Web 1.0 model, in which customer interaction is kept to an absolute
minimum.
